Robert E. Horton

HAMPTON - Robert E. "Bobby" Horton, conquered his long battle with cancer by going to be with his Lord and Savior on July 8, 2009.
He was born May 27, 1945, in Brooklyn Naval Hospital to Edwin M. Horton and the Late Catherine "Kay" Horton.
Bobby graduated from Frederick Military Academy in 1964 and spent two years at Chowan College. He served in the Army Reserve for seven years and worked for a short time with his father as a commercial waterman. Then at the age of 20, he went to work for CSX Transportation which was formerly the C&O Railroad. After 40 years of devoted service he retired in May, 2005.
He coached Phoebus Little League and Senior League for five years. Being a lifelong resident of Fox Hill, in 1982 his love of sports led him to be on the Board of Directors of Fox Hill Men's Fastpitch Softball. He held this position until 1990 when, due to a lack of financing, the organization folded. In 2007, he and his dear friend Craig Smith, through their hard work and determination, were able to revitalize the organization. In their second year, incredibly the team won the 2008 NSA Championship. He was also a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
He was preceded in death by his mother; brother, Michael B. Horton; and his sister, Kathleen Suzanne Horton.
Bobby is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pat Horton; his son, Robert "Robbie" E. Horton Jr. and wife, Joann, their children, Kaitlyn and Trevor who were the loves of his life; his son, Ryan P. Horton and wife, Tami; and his father, Edwin M. Horton.
Bobby was a member of Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church. He loved his minister and church family and it was through nurturing and prayer that his faith became a mainstay of his life.
The family would like to thank his longtime family physician, Dr. Lawrence Hyman and staff, Dr. Scott Kruger, his nurse Laurel and the team at Virginia Oncology in Hampton.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Wayne C. Moore with interment to follow in Clark Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
In Bobby's memory, contributions may be made to Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church 501 Beach Rd, Hampton, 23664 or to the Leukemia Research Foundation.
